How to switch energy supplier when moving house

Moving house: a checklist for organising your energy supply

Moving house is always a stressful time and having to organise your energy supply certainly doesn’t help. Unfortunately, it’s never as simple as telling your current energy provider to switch to your new home or even to carry on using the tariff your new home’s previous owner or tenant was signed up to. Organising your energy bills requires quite a bit of research and admin when you move house. And there’s more important things to get on with. Like sitting on boxes and eating chips or taking photos of keys to post to your preferred social media site.

This is why we’ve put together a really useful checklist so you don’t miss a trick when you come round to sorting out your gas and electricity suppliers during the big move. And it could mean ditching your previous supplier’s direct debit system all together to join us on our Powershop journey of changing the energy industry:

1. Tell your energy supplier that you’re moving house

First things first, you need to tell your existing supplier you’re moving. Provide them with the latest meter readings from the day you leave to ensure you don’t get charged for any gas and electrical supply used by the new occupants.

Here’s how to take an electric and gas meter reading:

  • Jot down the first five numbers on each meter from left to right
  • Ignore any numbers in red or surrounded by red colouring
  • If one of the dials falls between two numbers, then take the lower number

Also, give your current provider(s) as much notice as possible so they can send a final bill to your new address after you move in. This will give you peace of mind that your previous tariffs have now ended.

2. Locate your new gas and electricity meters

On the day you get the keys to your new home, locate your gas and electric meters. This shouldn’t take Indiana Jones levels of adventure, but it could be one of the most important finds in your new home.

You need to know the type of meter that is used for the energy supply in your new home in case they only suit a certain type of tariff. For example, if the previous occupants used an Economy 7 tariff – which has separate electricity costs for day and night – then the property could be fitted with an Economy 7 meter which is different to a standard meter because it gives two separate readings.

In this case, you’ll be limited to the tariffs and energy suppliers you can sign up with, which is always good to know before you start your research for the best energy prices.

3. Take a reading from your new gas and electricity meters

Just like how you don’t want to be charged for any energy used after you leave your old home, you don’t want to be charged for any gas or electric that was used before you moved into your new one.

Take meter readings on the day you move in to avoid any false charges. Have these readings ready to submit to the existing energy supplier when you get round to contacting them.

4. Contact the existing supplier

Hopefully you will be informed by the previous owner or tenant of who supplies the gas and electric to your new home. It will make life much easier. Likewise, it’s always good to let the new occupants of your old home know who the suppliers are.

If you’re not informed about who the supplier is, it’s likely that a bill will get sent to your new address from the existing suppliers. Alternatively, you can always try calling National Grid on 0870 608 1524. They know their stuff.

You’ll need to get in touch with the existing supplier before making any changes. Give them your up-to-date meter readings so they know when to start charging you from.

You’ll most likely be automatically put onto a standard tariff until you request otherwise. It’s best to find out the details of the existing tariff and how much it will cost you per month before shopping around for a better deal.

5. Do your research to find the best energy deal

Having access to the internet when you move in is such a time saver. It’s much easier to get an energy quote online these days than it is going through the process on the phone. But you can end up waiting weeks for your broadband to be installed if you leave it until when you move in.

It’s then you need to consider what type of tariff will save you the most money. Think about the lifestyle you and your family lead before deciding if you’d be better suited with a standard tariff, dual fuel tariff, pay-as-you go type tariff or you could be best suited to our model of Powerpacks and special offers. 6. Contact your new supplier

Once you’ve decided on your new supplier(s) and tariff, get in touch with your chosen energy company.

Make sure you have your meter readings handy along with the date that you moved in and all the research about the chosen tariff in case they try anything to get you to pay more.
