The nation has spoken! We asked you about how and what you spend your money on. And while the results show we’re more careful than ever now with our pennies when it comes to budgeting and spending money, we could still save a few quid on our energy bills.

The study of 2,000 people across the country found a staggering 58 per cent of us leave the TV on standby, clearly we can’t miss a single second of Love Island, even if we’re not in the same room.

Although no-one above the age of five is going to admit to being afraid of the dark, 37 per cent of us will leave a light on in a room we’re not even in.

And while it seems our summers only last about 48 hours, during which we’re mainly stuck indoors at work, just under a third of the people we spoke to kept their central heating on in the summer months, with some even opening a window when the house was too hot.

Outside of our seemingly tropical houses, we’ve become a nation of savers, looking to budget and beat the rising cost of living wherever we can.

Six out of ten people now save regularly, while just 13 per cent of us admit to splurging on big ticket items. Our research revealed that we’re happy to spend on takeaways and coffees (35 per cent), as well as new clothes (20 per cent).

However two thirds of people try to save as much spare cash as they can, with the monthly average savings coming in at £247.41 – that’s an impressive £3k put away annually.

Energy saving might not be at the top of everyone’s list of hobbies – but it can make a difference.

You don’t need to live in the dark huddled around a single candle to save money on your electricity bills. Simply adopt these five quick and easy energy saving habits to reduce how much electricity you use, helping to bring your bills under control.

  1. Turn out the lights when you leave a room - Simple, but effective. Why pay to light up a room you’re not using? Get into the habit of turning off the lights every time you leave and save money, energy and the planet. According to our study, loads of us still like our house to look like ‘Blackpool illuminations’ as our Nan would say.
  1. Switch appliances off standby - Leaving electronic appliances on standby is the classic energy sapper – and with even more devices we’re sure to be clocking up the electricity. But it’s not just the television – TV boxes, washing machines and home computers all have standby modes. Alone they don’t use much electricity, but leave them all on all the time and the cost could soon rack up.
  1. Don’t overfill the kettle - If you’re making tea for the masses then carry on, but if it’s just a lapsang souchong for one then there’s no need. Boiling more water than you need is a waste of energy to heat it. Aim to only fill the kettle with as much water as you need for your cup of tea – it’s an easy habit to learn and could save you money on your bills.
  1. Unplug chargers when they’re finished - Ever plugged your phone in to charge and left it on for hours, even when the battery’s full?Yep, that wastes electricity, and your phone or tablet will run out quicker than Donal Trump at a Mexican restaurant.
  1. Dry your clothes outside - Yes the weather can be unpredictable and leave your clothes out all day and chances are they’ll be wetter than when you hung them out to dry. But, chance it, as tumble dryers are one of those household appliances that sap your usage and send your bill through the roof.
